Forcing Vacation Time to Increase Productivity
Recharging the batteries is key to remaining highly productive at work and it is widely understood that without time to relax, physical and mental burnout is inevitable. A number of companies are addressing this need by forcing their employees to take some much needed time off. An article from the Wall Street Journal discusses these policies that allow for a well rested and subsequently more productive workforce.
A recent post on In Charge’s sister blog, The Juggle, raises the subject by pointing to two small firms that go out of their way to get staffers to take breaks. Motley Fool, a financial-services firm in Alexandria, Va., requires at least one of its 250 employees to take two straight weeks off per month. And Pixability, a Cambridge, Mass., producer of business videos with 12 employees, offers any staffer who takes off two consecutive weeks an additional two weeks’ time to take as he or she sees fit.
Of course, as the Juggle notes, most employers take a simpler approach to ensuring that staffers get a regular dose of R&R, while also avoiding the need to pay workers for unused vacation time. They enforce a “use-it-or-lose-it” rule, which prohibits workers from carrying unused vacation from one year to the next.
