5 Myths About Common Core Debunked

Oct 8, 2013

Common Core—that’s that government takeover of education, right? The nationalization of standards!

To the contrary, Common Core is a state-led program that pertains to local standards. Neither Congress nor the Department of Education is involved.

Here’s another myth. Common Core tells teachers what to teach. Swing and a miss.

Under Common Core, school curricula will be determined locally—by the school board, administrators, and teachers. Washington need not apply.

Still, isn’t Common Core an initiative of the Obama Administration? Nope. It was created before President Obama took office.

Myths like these are destructive. By all means, let’s have a debate. But let’s do so on the basis of facts, not fiction.
