Need to know…

  • Small Business Hiring Fell in April. Small business hiring dropped considerably in April, adding only 40,000 new jobs compared to the 75,000 positions created the previous month, according to a survey by Intuit. The pull back in hiring is the latest indication that job growth is losing momentum. The government is set to release its employment report Friday, but with first-time applications for state unemployment benefits not backing away from levels scaled in recent weeks, the 170,000 projected increase in new jobs in April could prove too optimistic.
  • Supreme Court’s Ruling Could Urge Other States to Pursue New Immigration Laws. The Associated Press reports that “Emboldened by signals from the Supreme Court that it may uphold parts of Arizona’s immigration law, legislators and activists across the country are gearing up to push for similar get-tough measures in their states. ... [L]awmakers in about a dozen states told the AP they are interested in proposing Arizona-style laws if the high court ruling goes their way.”
